Biography

Rita Y. Gilroy, age 98, passed away peacefully Tuesday, January 17, 2012 at her home.

Rita was born October 29, 1913 in Wayland, a daughter of Clifford & Emma (Schwingel) Young. She was a 1931 graduate of Wayland High School and a 1937 graduate of Elmira Business Institute. Rita was a payroll clerk and accounting agent for Gunlocke Chair Co. of Wayland for over 20 years. Rita married Edward A. Gilroy on June 4, 1960; he predeceased her on October 29, 1980. In addition to her parents and husband, Rita was also predeceased by a brother, Clifford Young and a sister, Genevieve Weinhart.

Rita was a member of the Wayland United Methodist Church since 1943; and a former member of the Wayland Evangelical Church. She was a 60 year member of the Wayland Eastern Star, where she was a past matron and member of the past matron club, she was also a member of the Steuben County Division of O.E.S. and the Wayland Historical Society.

Rita enjoyed reading and watching television, but most of all she loved spending time with her friends.

Rita is survived by 3 step-daughters, Janet Schwitzer, Lila Newkirk and Kathleen Becks;
9 step-grandchildren; many step-great grandchildren; her close and dear friends, Dee & Don Pebbles, Bill Mehlenbacher, Della Ward, Alberta MacDougal, Norberta Brown, Betty Hosenfeld, Donna Motzer and Bernie & Marilyn Beaupre as well as many other dear church family, friends, neighbors and care givers.

Friends may call 12 - 3 pm Friday at the Walter E. Baird & Sons Funeral Home, 300 West Naples St., Wayland. An Eastern Star service will be held at 3 pm, followed by a funeral service. Burial will be in the Village Cemetery, Wayland.

Last year Mrs. Gilroy sent us a letter and a picture of Mr. Gilroy & Mr. Scott. Written on the picture was a note saying that she thought we would enjoy the picture of these two fine men. It was such a lovely note and brought back some good memories. We sent her a thank you for thinking to send such a lovely message.
