Joseph A. Elliott, age 96, passed away peacefully Monday, August 21, 2017 at Noyes Memorial Hospital, Dansville.
Joe was born May 11, 1921 in Mt. Morris, the son of Rosario (Ray) and Agnes (Rizzo) Belliotti. He was a graduate of Mt. Morris High School. He married Victoria (Vicki) Sikorski on September 25, 1944. They were married for 69 years until her passing in 2014. In addition to his parents and wife, he was also predeceased by three brothers, Ray, Angelo & Sammy; and two sisters, Eleanor & Rosemary.
Joe was well-known throughout the Dansville area. He was a life-long parishioner of St. Mary's Church in Dansville, life member of the Dansville Historical Society, former member of the Dansville Lions Club, and an active participant in many other village organizations and activities.
In the 1940s, Joe was a professional ballroom dance instructor and exhibition dancer for Arthur Murray Studios. During the WWII era, the Studio had a mandate that instructors anglicize their last names. So, with the consent of his parents, Joe dropped the "B" and "i" from his birth name, changing it from "Belliotti" to "Elliott." Joe and Vicki moved to Dansville in the late 1940s.
Throughout his life, Joe enjoyed sharing his dancing knowledge with many friends throughout the Rochester and Southern Tier area. In the 1950s, he was a dance instructor at Bernarr McFadden's Castle on the Hill. In the 1970s, he worked at the NYS School for Industry (Rush) and Hillside Home for Boys (Rochester).
He was an avid Buffalo Bills, New York Yankee and Syracuse University sports fan.
He is survived by his daughter, Margaret DeJoseph, and son, Robert. Also surviving are six grandchildren (Jason, Jessica, Jennifer, Matthew, Michalene, and Nathan); many great and great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call 6-8 pm, Thursday at Chamberlin-Baird Funeral Home, 73 Main St., Dansville. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 am, Friday at St. Mary's Church, Elizabeth St., Dansville, followed by burial next to his Vicki at Holy Cross Cemetery, Dansville.
