Leona K. Wager, age 97, passed away Tuesday, September 12, 2017 at Soldiers & Sailors Hospital in Penn Yan, NY.
Leona was born Sept. 6, 1920 in Perry, a daughter of Fred & Mary (Reigelsperger) Smith. She married Martin Robert Wager on Feb. 9, 1939 in Cohocton; he predeceased her on March 29, 2001. Together they operated the Wager Family Farm for over 50 years. Leona was a wife, homemaker, mother of five children and a foster mother of many. In addition to her parents and husband, she was also predeceased by her son, Donald; her great-grandson, Cody; 3 sisters, Agnes, Rita & Myra; and her brother, Bernard.
Leona was a communicant member of St. Pius V Roman Catholic Church in Cohocton. She enjoyed playing euchre, canning, bird watching; especially blue birds and hosting hunters during deer season, but most of all she loved spending time with her grandchildren & great-grandchildren.
Leona is survived by her daughters, Jean (Dean) Wesley & Deborah (Robert) Thurling; her sons, Robert R. (Janet) Wager & Douglas (Elizabeth) Wager; her daughter-in-law, Jeanette Wager, 15 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; her sister-in-law, Ruthanna Smith; and many nieces, nephews & cousins.
Friends may call 6-8 pm Tuesday, Sept. 19th at the Walter E. Baird & Sons Funeral Home, 300 West Naples St., Wayland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 am, Wednesday, Sept, 20th at St. Pius V Roman Catholic Church, 35 Maple Ave, Cohocton, NY 14826. Burial will be in St. Pius Cemetery, Cohocton.
