Roland F. "Rock" Harter, age 74, passed away peacefully Friday, January 26, 2018 at Noyes Memorial Hospital in Dansville.
Rock was born July 8, 1943 in Wellsboro, PA, a son of Howard & Victorine (Campbell) Emmick; he was later adopted by his father Harold Harter. He grew up in Dansville and finished his education in the Navy. He was a veteran and a retired TM1 from the US Navy. He served from 1960 to 1980. After his retirement, he worked at Fort Monroe, VA; he was a torpedo tester from 1980 to 1989. During his naval career, he was a torpedo-man on the USS Meredith and traveled to almost every country in the world. He married his wife Lily in the Philippines. In addition to his parents, he was also predeceased by his wife, Lily Harter and his brother Gary Harter.
Rock was a member of the Cohocton American Legion.
Rock is survived by his children, Liwayway Hill & Roly Harter; his grandchildren; his siblings, Mike (Beverly) Harter, Jeanie Miller and Bonnie (Gerry) Hoppough; many nieces, nephews & cousins.
A memorial service with full military honors for Rock are scheduled for 2 pm, Tuesday at the Walter E. Baird & Sons Funeral Home, 300 West Naples St., Wayland. Burial will be in the Bath National Cemetery. A memorial wake is also being planned for this summer at his house for anyone who knew him.
