Obituary of Sara Wheaton

Sara "Sally" Wheaton, age 95, passed away Tuesday, July 17, 2018 at her home in Cohocton, surrounded by loving family and caregivers.

Sally was born November 3, 1922 in Cohocton, New York, a daughter of John and Vera (Wallace) Cleveland. She married Alton "Al" Wheaton, in 1943; he predeceased her in 2007 after 64 years of marriage. Sally was a 1966 graduate of SUNY Geneseo, with a degree in elementary education. She taught at Avoca Central School for 14 years before retiring.

Sally was very active in the Cohocton United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School, played the organ and held various leadership positions. She enjoyed visiting, talking to, and camping with friends and family. After retirement, Sally and Al traveled internationally and spent winters in Aiken, Georgia.

In addition to her parents & husband; she was also predceased by two infant children, Stephen and Elaine Wheaton; her sisters, Ruth (Cleveland) Cragg & Doris (Cleveland) Lewis; her brothers, John Cleveland and Donald Cleveland.

Sally was survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Ron and Karen Wheaton; her granddaughters, Taylor Wheaton and her husband Charles Nicolais, Malory Wheaton and her fiancé Katie Frouman; her nieces, Elaine (Cragg) Burritt, Lorna Lewis and Donna Ulmer; her nephews, Alan Lewis, John Cleveland, Richard Wheaton and Kenneth Wheaton; also many beloved great nieces and nephews.

Calling Hours will be 11am-12pm Saturday, July 21 Walter E. Baird & Sons Funeral Home, 300 West Naples St., Wayland, where a funeral service will follow immediately at 12 pm. Burial will be in the Wheaton Family Cemetery, Cohocton.
