Obituary of Charles R. Standish Jr.

Charles (Charlie) Russell Standish, Jr, age 88, of Naples. NY, passed away on October 3, 2018.

Charles was born in Canandaigua NY, August 20, 1930 to Charles and Elise (Eichenberger) Standish. He grew up on the farm in South Bristol, went to Naples High School and graduated at the young age of 16. Prior to attending college, he went to Blair Academy, a boarding/prep school in New Jersey. At Blair he excelled at running Track and was recruited to Brown University where he studied French Literature and served as Captain of the track team, setting school records in running. After college, Charles served in the Navy Reserves from 1952-54 as an aerial photographer.

After the Navy, Charles worked in the family business, Bristol Springs Equipment Corp., with his father. They grew grapes, harvested vineyards and sold tractors & farm supplies. He married Sheila Woodard in 1963. They raised three children on Hawks Road in South Bristol and at Walton Point on Canandaigua Lake.

Charles loved bowling and was a regular card player, especially Euchre. He particularly enjoyed raucous Euchre tournaments with the Standish and Bills clan. He also enjoyed photography and was known for shooting off fireworks at the lake at most any celebration. His greatest love however was fishing. The largest fish he caught in Canandaigua Lake was in 2003 near Longs Point and was a 17 pound lake trout he affectionately called "Walter" (pictured).

Charles was very involved in his community through Rotary Club, Ducks Unlimited and the South Bristol Fish & Game Club. He was best known as an avid fisherman on Canandaigua Lake and in his later years was referred to as the "old man of the lake" to the locals. His favorite place to be was on the deck at Walton Point with a glass of wine in his hand and a fishing line off the dock.

A favorite among family and friends was Charles' homemade wine, Berry Jack, aka "Stumpblower". His door was always open to the many friends and family who enjoyed telling fish stories over a glass (or two) of wine and a game of cards.

Charles is survived by his three children and four grandchildren: Daughter Mary Ellen, husband Mark Miola and their children Jake & Nathan of Mesa, AZ. Son Charles (Chuck) III and wife Page Standish and their children Molly & Jayden of Naples, NY. Daughter Julie Standish of Rochester, NY. He is also survived by his brother William Standish of Los Angeles, CA.

Charles was a devoted husband, father and friend. He loved his community of family and friends in Naples. He was a colorful member of this great community and will be dearly missed.

There will be a celebration of life at the South Bristol Fish and Game Club on Sunday October 28 at 1pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Naples Ambulance Box 671 or Naples Fire Company Box 306
