W. Brewster Kopp, age 93, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2018 in Buckeystown, MD where he had lived for the last 12 years. Brewster was born and raised in Newark, NY and was the son of Frederick & Bernice (Woodworth) Kopp. His mother was part of the Woodworth family in Avoca & Cohocton. His father was a chemist at the C.H. Stuart Company. He graduated from Newark High School in 1943, and then went to Harvard College in 1947, the first Newark High School graduate to attend Harvard. After graduating from the Harvard Business School in 1949, he embarked on a career in finance that spanned five decades. The highlight of his career was his service as Assistant Secretary of the US Army for Financial Management (1965-67) He then served as Chief Financial Officer of Digital Equipment Corp. and Otis Elevator Co. He also worked at American Can Co., the First National Bank of Boston, and the American Stock Exchange.
Brewster lived most of his life in Newark, NY, New York City, Boston & Greenwich, CT. He was a devote Christian and served on the Board of Biblica (The International Bible Society), among a long list of non-profit organizations. He was very proud of a profile in Forbes Magazine in 1998 about his charity work.
He is survived by three sons, Bradford (Jean) Kopp, Jeffrey (Susan) Kopp & Alexander Kopp; three grandsons, Duncan, Tyler & Andrew Kopp.
A memorial service will be held 11 m, Saturday, March 16th at the Stanwich Congregational Church in Greenwich, CT. Burial will be in Clearview Cemetery, North Cohocton, NY.
