John F. Wearkley, age 83, passed away Tuesday. Jan. 5, 2021 at Highland Hospital in Rochester.
John was born August 12, 1937 in Wayland, a son of George & Ruth (Blair) Wearkley. He attended Wayland Central High School. He was a veteran of the US Army, serving from 1955 to 1957; then he was in the Army Reserve until 1961. He worked at Kodak after military service; then he attended and graduated from Barber school. He married Helen M. Kline on June 20, 1965; she survives. He worked at the Main Barber Shop in Dansville; then he cut hair at his home and on Main Street in Wayland. Around 1986-87 he worked in Rochester with his partner Mike. John was a barber for over 45 years. In addition to his parents, he was also predeceased by his sister, Eleanor Green.
John was also a past member of the Wayland Lions Club. He enjoyed skiing; and was a ski instructor for over 30 years, working at Swain, Hunt Hollow & Bristol Mtn. and also in Syracuse.
He also enjoyed roller skating and riding motorcycles; especially his Harley Davidson, which he rode till he was 80. He also enjoyed baseball and basketball, and enjoyed being active and exercising. He was very proud of his family and loved spending time with them and teaching them how to ski, skate & play ball.
John is survived by his wife of 55 years, Helen; his children, Tim (Lisa) Wearkley and Heidi (Danny) Hudson; 5 grandchildren, Ryan Belanger, Grace Wearkley, Jacob Wearkley, Cole Hudson and Noah Hudson; many nieces, nephews & cousins.
Memorial services are being planned for a later date and will be announced.
