Betty Zahner

Obituary of Betty M. G. Zahner

Betty Mae Grace Zahner, age 88, passed into God's loving arms on Thursday, January 14, 2021 after a short struggle with cancer. Betty was born on August 29, 1932 in Canandaigua to the late Theodore & Orpha (Washbourn) Zahner. Betty was very proud to have grown up on Rhine Street in Naples and worked at the family vineyard & farm. Betty was a graduate of Naples Central School and was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Naples. She loved the country and being outdoors, and working in the vineyards, she eventually saved enough money to buy her own bicycle where she would ride it up and down the big Rhine Street hill, into town, to work, to her Grandmother's home, and anywhere else! In her mid-20s, Betty met Robert W. Cansdale and they married on November 14, 1957; together, they were blessed with 4 boys whom were the lights of her life. Betty was a single mother and though the boys were a handful, she did the best she could to raise them. Betty also worked at the Gunlocke Chair Factory in Wayland. Betty has resided in Hornell for the last 50 years; she was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Hornell and a 19 year member of the Elderwood Adult Day Program, which she enjoyed 5-6 days a week. In addition to her parents, Betty is predeceased by her son, Bobby Lee Cansdale; her siblings: Althia Omegia Bates & Clifford Zahner; and her nephews: Roger Bates of Pittsford. Betty is survived by her loving sons: Chris Lou Cansdale, Reggie (Carolyn) Cansdale, Kevin (Amanda) Foss; her grandchildren: Brian Cansdale, Shane (Jessica) Foss, Heather, Jamie & Savania Foss, Chelsea & Bobby Jr. Cansdale; great-grandchildren: Hailey & Zoe Cansdale, Caden Fenaughty, Kaleb, Anthony, Hunter & Cash Foss, Caiden, Eli & Adam Cansdal; and her nephew, Gary Bates of Pittsford. Friends are invited to call from 11am-1pm on Tuesday, January 19, 2021 at the Baird-Moore Funeral Home, 154 S. Main St., Naples. Funeral & burial services will be held privately. Facial covering, social distancing, and no-contact policies will be in effect. Please enter through the front door facing Main Street and exit out the rear of the building into the parking lot. Betty will be dearly missed by her loving family and friends for ever more. In lieu of flowers please consider making a memorial contribution to the Elderwood Adult Day Program, Special Activities Fund, 1 Bethesda Drive, Hornell NY 14843.
