Obituary of Larry Alton Johnson

Larry Alton Johnson "Jake," retired West Sparta Highway Department and life-long West Sparta resident, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 7, 2021, at home in the comfort of loved ones. He was 76 years old. Larry was born on December 12, 1944 in Dansville to the late Alton & Eleanor (Norton) Johnson. In addition to his parents, Larry is also predeceased by his Great Grandma Mable Norton; Aunt Gladys Kemp, Uncle Bob (Doris) Johnson, and many close friends. Larry is survived by his brother, Ronald L. (Linda) Johnson; uncle, Shirley Johnson; his 4 children: Pamela R. (Jeff) Livingston, Bonita L. Sanford, Larry J. (Rebecca) Johnson & Michael A. Johnson; his grandchildren: Rhyan A. (Stacy) Farmer, Bobby L. Laird Jr., Bradlee J. Laird, Elijah A. Bender, Jett C. Johnson; great-grandchild, Chloe M. Farmer; his nephew & niece: Rodney (Sandy) Johnson & Renee (Ard) Green; several cousins, great nieces and nephews; and countless close friends. Larry was a true Jack-of-all-trades; his work history includes some time with Lucidal, years of welding at Foster Wheeler, a partnership with a local tree and cemetery service all before finishing his working career with the Town of West Sparta Highway Department. He took pride in building his home in West Sparta, and worked hard to provide for those he loved. Outside of work, he could fix anything- from small electronics & small motors- to anything mechanical. If you needed a hand with a home improvement, Larry was your guy; he would be there with tools in-hand, ready to go. There may be some friendly bickering back and forth on the right way to do things, but he wouldn't leave until the job was done. In his earlier years, he enjoyed bowling, target shooting, playing cards, and just talking life with friends and family. He would frequent Skybrook camp-site, Powers Inn, tractor pulls, the occasional trip to the State Fair, or just stop in for some company and conversation. In 2000, he was involved in an accident that restricted him some physically, but it did not slow his desire to be busy, productive and helpful. He fumbled his way into figuring out the internet, mostly for shopping and paying bills, but he also found a way to get himself caught up in, and then his way out of, some internet scam. He became an accomplished cook, mastering recipes left to him by his mother, and expanded upon them with recipes he would find and tweak upon from the internet. He enjoyed watching the local wildlife, from birds and deer, to the pesky squirrels and chipmunks robbing birdseed and building nests in his truck. He enjoyed getting out for a good fish fry, most frequently the Wiscoy Firehall Fish Fry. To sum it up, Larry was a friend to any that came to know him, and he did not have an enemy in the world. He chose never to complain, he'd rather enjoy and appreciate the good things in life. He was soft spoken, and sometimes reserved with words, but when he did speak, people would listen because what he had to say would be of value, or would result in laughter and smiles. Larry was a generous, loyal, wise and loving man who will be missed dearly. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him! Per Larry's request, there will be no services at this time; a Celebration of Life is being planned for this Spring, we will update the obituary when more information becomes available. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a memorial contribution to the West Sparta United Methodist Church in honor of Larry's mother, Eleanor Johnson (4287 Redmond Road, Dansville NY 14437) or to your local American Legion in honor of all of those who have served in the military, including Larry's brother, son, and grandson.
