Obituary of Vergil L. Woodard

Vergil L. Woodard, age 93 of Naples, passed away peacefully in his home on Saturday, April 10th, 2021. Vergil was born on July 11th, 1927 in South Bristol to the late Leon and Blanche (Proper) Woodard. He served in the United States Air Force attached to the Army as a special equipment operator from 1947-1950 where he received The Army of Occupation Medal. In addition to his parents, Vergil is also predeceased by his loving wife Marlene (Preston) of 58 years; his sons: Michael, Timmy and Deano; and 7 siblings. Vergil planted his roots in Naples, working for Widmers, Xerox and the State before traveling the world as missionaries with his wife. He became a Deputy Marshall in Collbran, Colorado and also worked for the KOA in South Carolina. Meeting many unforgettable people along the way, he came back home to Naples to live out the rest of his life surrounded by loved ones. Vergil was a family man, an avid hunter and the best papa ever; his favorite pastime was going to the Redwood to see "his girls" and share a story or two with his friends over a cup of coffee. Vergil is survived by his daughters: Mary, Michelle (Marty), & Marie; his sons: Jimmy & David; 10 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandson Eli, who completed the family's five generations. A special thank you to Vergil's oldest daughter, Mary, for always taking such good care of him- especially during his last weeks. There are currently no services scheduled, a military service will be announced at a later date.
