Anne Kearney

Obituary of Anne M. Kearney

Anne M. (O'Leary) Kearney, age 92 of Naples, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 18, 2021. Anne was born on June 9, 1929 in Westboro Massachusetts to the late Timothy Joseph & Lillian Marie (Courtney) O'Leary. "Apple Annie", as she was known to her school age friends, got her nickname from helping her father Tim harvest and transport apples from their orchard to the Boston Farmers' Market on weekends. She also developed into an outstanding horseback rider on their Westboro farm and was very fond of her horse, as well as the family's three German Shepherd dogs. Anne graduated valedictorian of her high school class, and was always needled by her husband Steve that it was because her class consisted of only 93 people. Anne was a homemaker for much of her life, raising her four children while husband Steve was often on the road as a salesperson for Gunlocke Chair Company. She studied and taught herself the new "modern math", to be able to tutor her sometimes struggling children with their math homework. When her children were old enough to be trusted to be alone after school, Anne took on a part time job as accountant at the local Harley-Davidson motorcycle shop in Holden, MA. When the family moved to Naples, NY, Anne took on a part time job at Marketing Intelligence Service as editor of their international marketing journal. Anne was a devout Catholic her entire life. She insisted that her children attend catechism class every Saturday morning, despite their many protests. While a parishioner at Queen of the Holy Rosary Church in Kansas, Anne hand-made rosaries for any members of the parish who wanted one of her creations. When the family moved to Naples, Anne became an active member of the St. Januarius community, helping with the Sunday readings, collection, and counting of the offerings. The early morning St. J's weekday Mass regulars became Anne's beloved second family in her later years. Anne had many talents and interests during her lifetime. She loved and excelled at playing bridge, knitting, doing crossword and jigsaw puzzles. Anne was an avid Boston Red Sox fan, and was known to remind her family what time the game was on and what channel. Anne loved to be physically active, working in the yard and on her gardens. She could often be seen pushing her manual reel lawn mower around the front yard, even into her 90's. Anne's married initials were A-O-K, and to the many who knew and loved her, she was indeed, just that. In addition to her parents, Anne was predeceased by her husband, Stephen Kearney in 2005, and her sisters Helen Roy & Pat Morris. Anne is survived by her children David (Beth) Kearney, Sally (Sam) Blanchard, Stephen Kearney, and Diane (Chuck) Harter; grandchildren Emma, Mae, Courtney, Alex, Chelsea, and Bridget; great-grandchildren Alexa, Alivia, Oliver and Penelope; and generations of loving cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. A Celebration of Life Mass will be held at St. Januarius Catholic Church on August 9 at 11am.
