Joel R. Shaffer, age 74, passed away unexpectedly, on December 7, 2021.
Joel was born on February 24, 1947 in Berwick PA to the late Harry & Kathryn (Ridall) Shaffer.
Joel graduated from Bloomfield Central School in 1965 where he excelled at playing basketball, baseball & soccer. Joel went on to earn his Bachelor's Degree from Hamilton College in 1969 and played soccer. In 1970, Joel married Sandy Lindsey and together they raised three sons: Brian, David & Kevin.
Mr. Shaffer was a high school math teacher for 37 ½ years at Cohocton Central School and later Wayland-Cohocton Central School prior to retirement. Joel had a fiery passion for sports and coached thousands of students over his 50-year coaching career. He was an active member of the Cohocton Sports Booster Club since its beginning and was inducted to the Wayland-Cohocton Wall of Fame in February 2019.
When Joel wasn't coaching and teaching, he enjoyed being outdoors and hunting, fishing, & golfing. He also liked watching the Buffalo Bills & Syracuse Orange men's basketball. Joel was an excellent storyteller and loved spending time with his family and friends.
In addition to his parents, Joel is predeceased by his brother, Curtiss Shaffer; brother-in-law, Todd Lindsey; sisters-in-law, Joanne Shaffer & Barb Shaffer; and his father & mother-in-law, John & Emma Lindsey.
Joel is survived by his loving and devoted wife of over 50 years, Sandy Shaffer; his sons: Brian Shaffer of CT, David (Meg) Shaffer of Cohocton, & Kevin Shaffer of OR; his step-grandchildren: Edan & Dane Lehmann his brothers: Fred Shaffer & Dennis Shaffer; his sister, Anne (John) Lucey; his aunts: Melva George & Alberta Ridall; his brother-in-law, David Lindsey; and his sister-in-law, Clara Shaffer.
Family & friends may call from 4pm – 7pm on Friday, December 17th and 10am – 11am Saturday, December 18th at the Walter E. Baird & Sons Funeral Home, 300 West Naples St., Wayland. A Celebration of Joel's life will be held 11 am, Saturday, December 18th at the funeral home.
