Obituary of Deborah J. Merklinger

Deborah J. (Clark) Merklinger, 76, died April 21, 2022 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, New York after a heroic battle with a devastating brain hemorrhage. Deb was born August 21, 1945 in Charleston, SC. After relocating to Newburyport, Massachusetts, she graduated from Newburyport High School in 1964. Deb began her career at Seabrook Bank & Trust as a bookkeeper. Despite no formal accounting training, she rose to the position of Vice President of Operations as the result of good old fashioned hard work. As banks continued to merge in the 80s and 90s, Deb found herself relocating to Keene, New Hampshire in a role with New Dartmouth Bank. While in Keene, she married Grant Merklinger and made Naples her home. Following the move to the area, she was employed at the Ontario Center in Canandaigua. She loved her time there and took great pleasure in entertaining the residents with her various fun ideas. The annual highlight was Grant dressing as Santa and she would play Mrs. Claus. Together, they would provide Christmas gifts and goodies to the residents. Following the loss of her beloved Grant, she chose to remain in the area because of the connections she had made. In recent years, she shared some amazing adventures with her loving companion Ron Sinsebox and the extended Sinsebox family. While her time with them was all to brief, it was with Ron that Deb was able to travel to Knoxville, Tennessee to watch her granddaughter twirl baton in front of 100+ thousand fans at a Tennessee Volunteer football game. Following that trip, Deb was also able to enjoy an incredible trip to the Outer Banks together with the loving and tight knit Sinsebox family. It was at these moments, surrounded by an incredibly loving family, that she was in her glory. In addition to her beloved Ron, Deb is survived by her son Michael Downer and his two children, Madeline and Andrew; her son Stephen Downer, his wife Katy and their daughters Lindsey and Molly. She was especially proud of her grandchildren and loved them beyond measure and sharing their photos and various accomplishments brought her immense happiness. As one of seven children, her surviving siblings include Fred, Rita, Ellie, Patricia, Dean and Richard as well as many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her amazing friends John and Marilyn Eaton of Salisbury, Massachusetts and their children Darlene Reynolds and Julie Lovejoy. She is also survived by her lifelong friend Shirley Gamache of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. She was predeceased by her husband Grant Merklinger, her parents, and her daughter in law Jennifer Downer. In keeping with Deb's wishes, there will be no formal calling hours and burial will be private. A service of remembrance will be held Saturday, April 30, 2022 at 1:00 PM at the South Bristol Fish & Game Club, 6456 Cold Springs Road, Naples, NY. For those unable to make the New York service, Michael and Stephen will be hosting an open house on Saturday June 11, 2022 at Riverwalk Brewing, 40 Parker Street, Newburyport, MA from 2:00-4:00 PM.
