Joanne M. Baird, age 74, passed away peacefully, Sunday, February 1, 2015 at McAuley Manor in Hornell.
Joanie was born January 8, 1941 in Webster Crossing, a daughter of DeForest "Shorty" & Ruth (Oaks) May. She was a graduate of Wayland Central School and attended Bryant & Stratton Business School in Rochester. She married Walter E. "Gene" Baird on September 5, 1959; he predeceased her on October 30, 2008. Joanie & Gene started the Sears Catalog Store in Wayland and she was also co-owner and secretary of the Walter E. Baird & Sons Funeral Home Inc., with her husband Gene for 38 years; they retired in 1997. In addition to her parents and husband, Joanie is also predeceased by a grandson, Brandon Carl Baird.
Joanie was a member of the St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Wayland, where she was involved on many committees; she was also a former member and past president of the Wayland Fire Dept. Ladies Auxiliary.
Joanie enjoyed gardening, baking, snowmobiling, hunting, spending time at "The Camp" and playing cards with the girls, but most of all she loved spending time with her grandchildren.
Joanie is survived by her children, Chip (Angie) Baird, Rich Baird (Kristie Stephens) and Natalie Baird (Dave Didas); her grandchildren, Cassie Baird, Quint Baird, Brock Baird, Bryce Baird, Jim Edmister & Joe Edmister; her siblings, Sharyl & Bruce Brown, Marilyn & Bernie Beaupre, Jack & Kathy May, Mark & Sue May; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Miriam & Bob Booth, John Forsyth and Clara Baird; 1 aunt, Alberta Holmes; 1 special uncle-in-law, Mick Reigelsperger; many nieces, nephews & cousins.
Friends may call 3-5 & 7-9 pm Thursday at the Walter E. Baird & Sons Funeral Home, 300 West Naples St. Funeral services will be private. Burial will be in the Village Cemetery, Wayland.
