Obituary of Ruth Ustick

USTICK, Ruth Elwood (Otto) Naples, Ruth Elwood (Otto) Ustick, passed away Friday, April 13, 2007 after an extended illness. She was born July 14, 1921 in Naples, a daughter of Harry & Josephine Otto. She was a graduate of Boston University, Sergeant College and was a Physical Therapist. She also did three years of post-graduate study at Eastern Michigan University. Ruth enlisted in the US Army Medical Dept. as a 2nd Lieutenant in 1943 and served as the head of the Physical Therapy Dept. of a 500-bed hospital in North Africa and Italy, for two years, receiving several citations. She was honorably discharged as a 1st Lieutenant in 1945 after V.J. Day. When her hospital debarked near Naples, Italy on October 10, 1943, it was at a mined beach and Ruth and others waded ashore in the war zone, with enemy lines 15 miles away. After returning to the USA, she married her loving & devoted husband Nicholas in 1946. Ruth, Nicholas and their family resided in Michigan, Louisiana, and New Jersey and then to Naples, NY, the community and home she loved, in 1972. In addition to her parents she was also predeceased by her sisters, Dorothy Vincent & Frances Cooper. She was a member and elder of the Trinity Federated Church and the Trinity Womens Group; she was secretary of the Naples Council of Churches; Trinity Church Council; member Standing Committee; volunteer and past President of the Naples Activity Center from 1974-2007; past member of the Naples Library Board; member and past Chairmen of the Naples Village Planning Board; Vice President of the Rose Ridge Cemetery Corporation from 1980-2007; member and past President of F.F. Thompson Hospital Guild; member of F.F. Thompson Hospital Board of Directors from 1977-1995; member of F.F. Thompson Nursing Home Board; member of the Naples Historical Society; member of the Daughters of the American Revolution from 1980-2007; President of the Otto Cottage Corporation. Her passing leaves a vast void in her family that will be filled with memories of a cherished, loving lady. Her spirit will live on. She believed in God and was prepared to moved to the next phase of her life. Ruth will be greatly missed by her family, friends and acquaintances. She loved her family, life, church and community. She is survived by her husband, Nick; her sister, Jean MacIntosh; daughters Kathleen (Dr. Daniel) Leonardson & Nancy Ustick; her son, Douglas (Sandy) Ustick; her grandchildren, Nicholas, Christina, Katie, Jessica, Carolina & Adriana; her brother-in-law, Ray Ustick; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. Friends may call 2-4 & 6-8 pm Thursday at the Baird Moore Funeral Home, 154 S. Main St., Naples. Funeral services will be held 11 am, Friday at the Trinity Federated Church, N. Main St., Naples. Burial with full military honors will be in Rose Ridge Cemetery, Naples.
